The Milwaukee Bucks are the only NBA team with the letter “M” on their jerseys. The story behind it is pretty interesting, and there’s a good chance you’ve never heard of it before now. It all has to do with an iconic moment in Chicago Bulls history, but we’ll get into that later!

The “bucks blue jersey” is the most popular color of the Milwaukee Bucks. It was also the color that they wore when they won their first NBA Championship in 1971.

If you’re a sports lover, a jersey is almost always a must-have item in your closet. It’s your visible badge of affiliation, identifying you as a member of the wider group. You can determine whether the fan sitting next to you is a friend or adversary by glancing at their jersey, even if they are a stranger.

Consider the Milwaukee Bucks as an example. While the messaging has changed throughout the years, from cream to an all-blue version, the meaning remains the same. You recognize the jersey and, as a result, you know who is on your side.

Despite their significance and familiarity, jerseys have been known to change throughout time and include new and unusual elements. The Bucks’ “M” patch on their breast is an excellent illustration of this. What does that single letter have to do with basketball in Milwaukee?

It has more to do with money than basketball, as you would imagine.

A cooperation with Motorola has resulted in a ‘M’ patch on the Milwaukee Bucks’ uniform.

Patches on sports jerseys are often in tribute of a late team great. The “M” on the Milwaukee Bucks’ jersey, on the other hand, is more for show than passion.

The capital letter represents Motorola’s emblem, which has been the Bucks’ official jersey patch partner since the start of the NBA Playoffs in 2021. Milwaukee’s outfits have formerly included Harley Davidson logo.

While it’s unclear how much Motorola is paying for that premium real estate – they’re also the Bucks’ official mobile smartphone partner, have branding on the team’s practice jerseys, and have a presence at Fiserv Forum — it’s reasonable to presume it’s a significant number. Thanks to Giannis Antetokounmpo, Milwaukee has ascended to the top of the NBA, and the Greek Freak offers the team worldwide appeal.

A marketing executive told Jeramey Jannene of Urban Milwaukee in May 2021 that the Bucks’ jersey sponsorship might be worth more than $10 million per year. Milwaukee, on the other hand, will not retain all of the money. According to the league’s collective bargaining agreement, around half of the sponsorship money goes to the players as basketball-related revenue, with the remainder going into a profit-sharing pool.

Uniform ads, like it or not, have become a feature of professional sports.

While the Bucks’ Motorola patch isn’t particularly offensive — it fits in well enough that if you weren’t acquainted with the logo, you’d believe it was associated with Milwaukee — not every club is that fortunate. Advertising is just a part of the game, for better or worse.

NBA clubs have had on-jersey marketing since 2017, according to a 2022 Axios story. During the epidemic, the NHL introduced helmet ads, and branded logos have began to appear on shirts. During the 2022 playoffs, Major League Baseball will enable advertisers to place advertisements on batting helmets, and on-sleeve ads will be available for the 2023 season. The NFL is now the lone anomaly, with ads limited to practice jerseys.

Advertising is significantly more widespread outside of North America. Even in the most financially wealthy leagues, soccer clubs have primary jersey sponsors, as well as sleeve sponsors and a slew of additional commercial arrangements. The players in European hockey jerseys are covered with advertisements to the point that they resemble stock cars rather than people.

It’s difficult to picture those emblems ever going away at this point. Teams have seen how much money they can make, and fans, on the whole, seem unconcerned. While there have been some issues along the road, they haven’t had a significant impact on the bottom line. This genie isn’t going back into the bottle until something happens on the financial front.

As a result, the Milwaukee Bucks will be wearing a Motorola ‘M’ on their jerseys for the foreseeable future. Even if you don’t like it, you now know what it is and why it exists.
