UFC 280 will be held at the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates on October 22, 2022.
The event is another return to Abu Dhabi who have a thriving events calendar for UFC bouts after a deal to host 5 years of title fights that started in 2019.
Etihad Arena on Yas Island has been the home of UFC in Abu Dhabi since 2020 and will once again see a number of title fights. This makes it one that UFC fans are eagerly anticipating and odds are circulating for those who bet online with a wide range of markets.
Alongside the event, OThe Abu Dhabi Showdown Week will run from October 17th to 23rd which is
Oliveria v Makhachev
The main event is a huge match up which sees Brazilian fighter Charles Oliveira take on the 30-year-old Russian Islam Makhachev in the title fight.
Oliveira was stripped of the title in 2021 having failed to make weight and this leaves the title vacant right now and one Pereira will be desperate to win after a dominant recent victory over Justin Gaethje.
Due to Oliveira missing weight, Gaethje was the only fighter who could have taken the title back in May this year. Oliveria won the bout in the second round and set up the opportunity to fight again to regain his title.
He takes on a fan favorite in Makhachev who has won twice in Abu Dhabi in 2019 and 2021 against Davy Ramos and Dan Hooker respectively. The Russian is on a 10 fight winning streak and is coming off a first round win over Bobby Green in his last fight.
Oliveira will be wary of the form his opponent is in and Makhachev should be confident in taking the open title bout according to the odds for those who bet online. It is one that will excite the fans no doubt, a top draw title fight for all to savor.
Sterling v Dillashaw
Bantamweight title holder Aljamain Sterling will be defending his title for the second time, this time up against T.J. Dillashaw.
Jamaican fighter Sterling has been on a seven fight winning run which also included two victories over the former champion Petr Yan.
Sterling won his first matchup with Yan by disqualification at UFC 258 and fans and those who cover the competitions were critical of this decision. He later returned after neck surgery to face off against Yan again at UFC 273 and won on split decision.
Dillashaw has had his fair share of criticism through his career as well, having been suspended for two years by USADA for performance enhancing drugs.
The 36-year-old American came back and defeated Cory Sandhagen by split decision in his first fight since his suspension expired. He showed no signs of rustiness and stated he was promised a title challenge fight on his return.
Dillashaw is a former two time champion and is determined to give Sterling his toughest test yet in defending the title.
O’Malley v Yan
This will be Sean O’Malley’s toughest test in his UFC career, coming up against the former Bantamweight champion, Petr Yan.

O’Malley is currently ranked 13th in the bantamweight rankings and the 27-year-ol American is looking forward to his opportunity. He has won 15 of his 17 MMA fights and 11 of those through knockout.
The Arizon native expects to face the winner of Sterling and Dillashaw should he get past Yan in this fight in a title fight despite never beating a top-10 UFC fighter.
Yan had a 10-fight winning run ended by Aljamain Sterling back at UFC 259 in March 2021. He then defeated Cory Sandhagen before losing once again to Sterling at UFC 273 at UFC 273 in April 2022.
The Russian fighter is ranked second in the bantamweight rankings and a huge test for O’Malley.
At 5’7 he is much shorter than O’Malley who is 5’11’’ so will have to prepare for the extra reach and size advantage the American has over him. Despite this Yan is an experienced and dangerous fighter who will be looking to get his winning form back.
The other fights on the card see Palestinian Belal Muhammad take on Sean Brady who currently has 15 wins from 15 fights in UFC. Both fighters will know that they are pushing for opportunities to compete in a title fight. This matchup could put one ahead of the other in the opportunities coming up in the Welterweight division.
In the Lightweight division, Beneil Dariush will take on Mateusz Gamrot. Dariush is still trying to build is way back up from being forced out with injury in a bout with Islam Makhachev back in February.
No rematch could be organized as Makhachev will take on Oliveira; but taking on Gamrot should give the winner a chance to move on to a title bout. The polish fighter is coming off a five-fight winning run and both will see this fight as a chance to set themselves up for the next level in the weight class.
