Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott has been playing through a shoulder injury. The injury occurred in the fourth quarter of the fourth preseason game. And despite Prescott’s attempts to hide the injury, he was unable to continue playing. Prescott, the 4th overall draft pick out of Mississippi State, is coming off a remarkable rookie season. In 2017, Prescott threw for 3,877 yards, 26 touchdowns and only four interceptions. Prescott was named the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year.
Cowboys fans are nervous. Their quarterback is out for the season. Dak Prescott is expected to miss six to 10 weeks after undergoing an arthroscopic procedure on his left shoulder. Prescott was one of four quarterbacks the Cowboys drafted in the 2016 NFL Draft, but he has played well and is widely considered to be the heir apparent to Tony Romo.

Despite the fact that his surgically repaired ankle seems to be in excellent condition, Dak Prescott has already been forced to cope with an issue. Given that he is paid to throw the ball, the fact that his throwing shoulder is less than 100 percent at the start of August doesn’t speak well for the Dallas Cowboys.

The health of Dak Prescott is still a major topic in training camp.
Prescott got a life-changing increase from the Cowboys this spring after sustaining a horrific ankle injury five games into the 2020 season. The two-time Pro Bowler began training camp with the assurance of long-term financial stability after signing a four-year, $160 million contract with $126 million guaranteed.
However, the 28-year-old didn’t have to wait long to face a setback. While Prescott’s foot has held up nicely in training camp thus far, his right shoulder has been one of the more interesting injury stories to watch.
On July 28, the sixth-year quarterback left practice early due to stiffness in his throwing shoulder. Prescott’s status for the next season was naturally called into doubt. Following a severe injury that cut short his 2020 season, the great quarterback can’t afford to miss any more games if he wants to keep his $160 million deal.
If the Cowboys want to make the playoffs, they must have Prescott in the lineup every week. However, with their highest-paid and most important player out with latissimus strain, there’s cause to be concerned about the future.

The Dallas Cowboys faced the Pittsburgh Steelers in a Hall of Fame preseason game on Thursday night. Dallas, of course, didn’t have their regular starting quarterback at the helm. During a halftime interview with FOX, Prescott provided an update on the condition of his injured shoulder instead of running the offense.
He said, “We’re being careful.” “Obviously, we’re handling it day by day. I have five weeks before the season begins, so I have plenty of time. And I’m going to put that time to good use by getting ready for that game.”
While Prescott and the club seem unconcerned about his availability for Week 1, not everyone in the organization shares that optimism. Cowboys great Troy Aikman made an unsettling remark on the FOX broadcast that might raise some eyebrows among Dallas supporters.
According to a tweet posted by The Athletic’s Jon Machota, he stated, “The Cowboys are downplaying it, but I believe when your franchise quarterback is missing the amount of time he’s missing, I tend to think it’s a little bit more important than what they have led on.”
Aikman certainly brings a unique viewpoint to the table, having played the position for 12 years in Dallas. Maybe the Cowboys are exaggerating the seriousness of their star quarterback’s ailment. Prescott may not want to cast a damper on Dallas fans’ Super Bowl hopes by disclosing additional information concerning his throwing shoulder.
In any case, Aikman’s remark doesn’t sound encouraging for a guy coming off a serious lower-body injury. Dallas will be in severe danger if the injury is greater than expected and Prescott is unable to play at his best.
Without a healthy Prescott in the lineup, the Cowboys have little chance of winning the NFC East.
The Cowboys’ chances of making the playoffs with a healthy Prescott are still in doubt. Dallas, after all, has to make a far greater jump forward on defense in addition to improving on offense. The addition of talented rookie linebacker Micah Parsons should help, but it may not be enough if Prescott’s shoulder becomes a significant issue.
During the 2020 season, Cowboys fans saw the consequences of poor quarterback performance (along with a terrible defense). Given that the same names make up the rest of the depth chart, Dallas would be in serious danger if it had to depend on Cooper Rush, Ben DiNucci, or Garrett Gilbert. Mike McCarthy has no chance of reaching the playoffs in his second season in Dallas if Prescott fails or is unable to play at all.
Over the next five weeks, the Cowboys must hope that their most valuable player returns to full health.
Even if Dak Prescott’s shoulder feels better going into the season, there’s no assurance he’ll be able to complete the season without injury.
Dallas supporters can only pray that history does not repeat itself in 2020.
