The San Francisco 49ers were looking for a big rebound year in 2021 after an injury-plagued season in 2020. Joey Bosa is back in the lineup, Jimmy Garoppolo is back as quarterback, and rookie Trey Lance may make an appearance later in the season.

Everything seemed to be in place for the 49ers to contend for a postseason berth this season. Then tragedy came once again.

During the 49ers’ Week 1 win against the Detroit Lions, starting running back Raheem Mostert suffered a knee injury. Mostert is expected to miss the rest of the regular season due to the injury.

The San Francisco 49ers are in desperate need of running backs.

And, as a result of RB Raheem Mostert’s announcement today that he would miss the rest of the season due to a knee injury suffered against the Lions, the 49ers have signed former Lions’ RB Kerryon Johnson to their practice squad, according to his agent @DrewJRosenhaus.

With Mostert out for the season, the 49ers are in a difficult situation only a few days into their new season. On offense, Niners head coach Kyle Shanahan is a master at finding output from unexpected sources, but he still believed Mostert would be his main back this season.

Teams are seldom prepared to cope with losing a starter so early in the season, regardless of the coach, strategy, or system in place.

The 49ers have a few choices as far as the future goes. They may ride with their internal backup running backs, who include Elijah Mitchell, Trey Sermon, JaMycal Hasty, Trenton Cannon, and Kerryon Johnson, who was just acquired. They may also choose for free agency.

The current crop of free agent running backs isn’t very enticing. There is, however, one familiar figure that 49ers supporters seem to have embraced.

Fans are clamoring for the signing of Frank Gore.

Frank Gore is a San Francisco 49ers legend. He spent the first ten years of his NFL career in San Francisco, running for an incredible 11,073 yards.

In a technical sense, Gore is a free agent right now. Despite his age, the future Hall of Fame running back has yet to officially retire from the NFL. Last season, he played in 15 games for the New York Jets and did an excellent job. Gore has 742 total scrimmage yards and two touchdowns during the season.

Not bad for a man approaching 40.

Gore may be added to the San Francisco 49ers’ roster.

San Francisco’s decision to resort to Gore in the year 2021 to preserve its running back room seems stupid at first sight. However, on second thought, it isn’t the worst of ideas.

Given his strong season with the Jets last year, Gore is likely still in terrific running condition, and he’s clearly acquainted with the 49ers and the surrounding San Francisco region. It’s not ideal to have to rely on Gore, but he can certainly assist a struggling 49ers running back group.

It’s also worth noting that Gore would most likely accept a spot on the practice squad. This enables the 49ers to sign him without having to make room on the 53-man roster. Due to the newly adopted practice squad regulations, the Niners may still promote Gore on game days.

Gore expressed his desire to return to the 49ers openly this offseason (Niners Wire), indicating that he is still interested.

There’s no immediate word on whether Gore and the 49ers will reunite. It is, nevertheless, something to keep an eye on. If the Niners lose another running back this season, they may be forced to ask Gore to return home.
