In 2008, Steven Jackson set the NFL on fire in St. Louis, rushing for over 1,300 yards and 17 TDs. In 2009, he was traded to Atlanta for a second-round pick and Darren Howard, and never looked back. Since then, he’s posted three consecutive 1,000-yard seasons, and scored at least 12 TDs every year since 2010. His career arcs were riddled with ups and downs, but in retrospect, it was clear that the Saints failed to work out a deal with him while he was in St. Louis. They clearly wanted to keep him, but had no way to make that happen, and in the end, that turned out to be a disaster.

With their roster dwindling and the season winding down, the Saints are all but out of the playoffs. Wide receiver Nick Toon sealed their fate by announcing his retirement, which not only means they will not have a serious WR threat by game time, but they also lose a big contributor in the passing game.

After a lackluster weekend, the New Orleans Saints are still in the thick of the playoff hunt. Now, even after a loss to the Seattle Seahawks, they’re still in position to make the playoffs. Now, don’t let the record fool you—the Saints are still in first place in their division, and anywhere past that is gravy. But if the Saints are going to make the playoffs, their margin for error is very slim. The worst-case scenario is that the Saints miss the playoffs.. The two starting cornerback spots for the New Orleans Saints are a source of uncertainty heading into the 2021 NFL season. Marshon Lattimore is the undisputed No. 1 cornerback and one of the best in the NFL, but he could face a suspension as a result of an arrest earlier this offseason.

As a result, the Saints are attempting to patch up a leaking dam with a few of bandaids.

And the crack isn’t closing any time soon.

Veteran CB and anticipated starter Patrick Robinson announced his retirement on Tuesday, enlarging the Saints’ most visible vulnerability even further.

The Saints are in desperate need of a cornerback heading into the season.

The Saints had a difficult offseason in 2021.

Drew Brees, the team’s long-time quarterback, announced his retirement in March. The Saints then waved farewell to Trey Hendrickson, Emmanuel Sanders, and Jared Cook, among others, after free agency opened up. And, as if things weren’t bad enough, Michael Thomas now seems to want out as well.

Janoris Jenkins, who signed with the Tennessee Titans earlier this offseason, was one of the Saints’ biggest losses. Last season, the veteran CB started 13 games for New Orleans, recording 12 pass breakups and three interceptions.

Jenkins’ departure created a gaping void in the secondary opposite Lattimore, which Robinson was expected to fill. But following his most recent announcement, that isn’t going to happen.

With Lattimore and Robinson on either side, the Saints were in good shape at cornerback even after losing Jenkins to free agency. However, Lattimore’s status for Week 1 remains in doubt.

After authorities discovered him in possession of a stolen gun in March, the Ohio State product was arrested and charged with receiving stolen property. He was eventually released after posting bond, but he is now awaiting news from the NFL on whether or not he will be suspended.

The Saints have been scrambling to acquire cornerback help with Lattimore’s status for the start of the season in doubt. They’ll have to step up their efforts even more now.

Robinson announced his retirement from the NFL on Tuesday at the age of 33, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. The veteran CB spent eight of his eleven pro seasons in New Orleans, where he was expected to fill a void on the outside. It’s now likely that the Saints may be without both starting cornerbacks they had at the start of the summer, putting them in desperate mode just one month before the season begins.

The largest hole on the Saints’ roster has just gotten a whole lot bigger.

With Robinson retiring from football and Lattimore’s condition for the start of the season uncertain, New Orleans isn’t in a good place at cornerback. This offseason, the Saints signed veterans Prince Amukamara and Brian Poole, but neither of them is an above-average starter at this point in their careers.

New Orleans sees Paulson Adebo, a rookie third-round pick, as a promising future contributor. He isn’t likely to be ready to jump right in and start working on day one. Keith Washington Jr., P.J. Williams, Ken Crawley, and Lawrence Woods make up the rest of the CB room. C.J. Gardner-Johnson and Grant Haley are the nickel cornerbacks.

There’s a good chance the Saints will start making calls to improve their CB depth. Last year’s first-round draft pick of the Jacksonville Jaguars, C.J. Henderson, could be a name to keep an eye on in the trade market.

With only a month until the season begins, the Saints had better start dialing.

This week, the Saints released veteran defensive back Jabari Greer. When the two sides met in free agency, Greer was rumored to be seeking a contract in the $6-$7M range. That seemed like a very reasonable expectation, but for whatever reason that amount didn’t come to pass.. Read more about new orleans saints newspaper headlines and let us know what you think.
