Fitzmagic has vanished. Ryan Fitzpatrick is retiring from the NFL after 17 seasons and nine franchises. The former Harvard quarterback had an outstanding career that surpassed expectations, earning him the nickname “Fitzmagic” in various pro football locations. Fitzpatrick may be out of the game today, but he won’t be forgotten anytime soon, particularly if he joins Amazon’s Thursday Night Football commentary crew.
Ryan Fitzpatrick announced his retirement from the NFL after a 17-year career.
Ryan Fitzpatrick, a long-time NFL quarterback, has chosen to retire at the age of 39.
The Arizona native played college football for the Harvard Crimson before being selected in the seventh round (No. 250) in the 2015 NFL Draft by the St. Louis Rams.
Fitzpatrick spent two seasons with the Rams before moving on to the Cincinnati Bengals for the following two. During this period, he was largely a backup, although he did receive some starts, with a 4-10-1 record as a starter. He threw 12 touchdowns and 17 interceptions in his first two seasons.
The Ivy League quarterback earned a three-year contract with the Buffalo Bills in 2009. Fitzpatrick achieved some success in Western New York and became a household name among NFL fans. Even though those Bills teams weren’t very good, Fitzpatrick was able to lead them to victory on occasion.
Fitzpatrick finished his stint with the Bills with a 20-33 record as a starter, 11,654 passing yards, 80 touchdowns, and 60 interceptions.
Fitzpatrick then spent a season with the Tennessee Titans and another with the Houston Texans before joining the Jets. He had his lone winning season as a starter in 2015. The Jets finished 10-6 that season, only missing out on the playoffs due to a tiebreaker with the Pittsburgh Steelers, who also finished 10-6.
Following that, he spent four seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Miami Dolphins. He was assigned to back up rookie quarterbacks Jameis Winston and Tua Tagovailoa, although he outperformed both at times.
Fitzpatrick signed a contract with Washington for 2021, but he was injured in Week 1 and never returned.

In 2022, Ryan Fitzpatrick will not be on an NFL sideline with a clipboard. Now that he’s retired, he won’t be throwing a 50-yard bomb with a defender hanging on his facemask or flinging soul-crushing interceptions.
That doesn’t rule out the possibility that “Fitzmagic” may return to the NFL.
According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, the now-retired quarterback is in discussions with Amazon to join the streaming service’s Thursday Night Football commentary crew. While Rapoport does not specify what Fitzpatrick’s job on Amazon Prime would be, he does refer to it as “a crucial part.”
Fitzpatrick will join veteran broadcaster Al Michaels and former ESPN college analyst Kirk Herbstreit in the booth for the Thursday matches if he accepts the Amazon job.
Fitzpatrick’s “main role” might be in the studio for the pregame, halftime, and postgame shows. Amazon has not yet revealed who will make up that squad. Kay Adams, the former presenter of Good Morning Football, and sports media tycoon Pat McAfee are said to be on the platform’s shortlist.
A remarkable and unlikely career
Ryan Fitzpatrick is retiring from football after a 17-year career in which he earned an estimated $82.1 million. He started for nine NFL teams and threw for roughly 35,000 yards and 223 touchdowns.

“Fitzmagic” is one of Ryan Fitzpatrick’s most lasting nicknames in the NFL. His second moniker, “Fitztragic,” is also used in certain sections of the football world.
In a nutshell, the two nicknames describe Fitzpatrick. On any given Sunday, fans would be equally likely to witness him perform miracles (typically against a poor club) or toss a heartbreaking interception just as a win seemed to be within reach.
With a 59-87-1 record as a starter, the bearded Harvard grad returns. He threw for 34,990 yards, 223 touchdowns, and 169 interceptions in his career.
In his 17-year career, Fitzpatrick earned $82.1 million, the highest ever for a seventh-round choice. He’s also one of just seven quarterbacks in contemporary NFL history to throw for 400 yards or more four times. Peyton Manning (8), Dan Marino (7), Drew Brees (5), Aaron Rodgers (4), Patrick Mahomes (4), Tom Brady (4), and Fitzpatrick (4) are the names on that list (4).
Most seventh-round draft selections never make it onto a team, much less play for 17 years. Neither do the majority of Ivy League football players.
Fitzpatrick is a different breed, as anybody who saw him in Buffalo last season with his shirt off knows, and it should translate well to Amazon’s football coverage.
