An unlikely championship matchup between Phil Mickelson and Tom Brady will take place this afternoon. Mickelson has a chance to become only the fifth player to capture a career grand slam of the four major championships, and he’s in rarefied air: Of the four players to have accomplished that feat, none had ever won a major tournament prior to the year he captured his first grand slam.

Phil Mickelson loves playing golf because he is competitive. Mickelson has seen a few sets of golf clubs thrown away because they were not performing as well as he had hoped. Mickelson is not shy about calling a new set of clubs trash and putting them in the trash. Mickelson is always trying to find the best equipment for himself.

Phil Mickelson is suddenly a contender for a Grand Slam. All you had to do was watch and absorb Tom Brady. The oldest defender to win a Super Bowl learned the oldest golfer to win a major tournament. I was lucky enough to spend some time with him, Mickelson said Monday. And when I’m with him, I learn a lot… just watching and observing the dedication, the hard work. We’ll know this week if it leads to a win at the U.S. Open.

Last spring, they played in a charity match against Tiger Woods and Peyton Manning. The next match in the series, which began with Mickelson against Woods, will be played on the 6th hole. In July, they will face Aaron Rodgers and Bryson Deschambault together. Brady won the Super Bowl in February. Mickelson won the PGA Championship in May. Both are not only accomplished seniors in their respective sports, but they also value health, although Michelson came into the game relatively late. To make up for lost time, he founded Coffee For Wellness, a gourmet blend that he says helps combat fatigue and improves cognitive function. Brady has been on a diet for most of his NFL career. He’s very disciplined in eating, resting, taking the time to do the right things after a round and so on, Mickelson said at a news conference in Torrey Pines, where the US Open begins Thursday. It’s inspiring to see.

Brady showed his commitment to Augusta

. The average golfer who is at the famed Augusta National Golf Club this weekend may be tempted to run around with their clubs and take full advantage of the driving range, practice facilities and golf course. Not Brady. When we played in Augusta and he stayed at the Cottages, he got up hours before the game, Mickelson told reporters. He went to the gym and trained with a band for an hour, just to exercise and activate his shoulders, knees, hips and everything else. This became a source of motivation for Mickelson. When you see what’s going on, it’s much easier to do that, he said.

Mickelson is totally focused this week

. Mickelson won the Masters three times, the PGA Championship twice and the British Open once. He came very close to winning the U.S. Open, finishing second six times between 1999 and 2013, but is still one win short of a Grand Slam career. He turns 51 on Wednesday, and he comes after a victory that has changed the way people think about his game, and he realizes he is running out of time to get the big win that will end his story. It’s in my backyard, said Mickelson, who was born in nearby San Diego. I had the chance to prepare well and I wanted to do my best. So I ignored all the noise. I turned my phone off. I put a lot of other things aside to focus on this week and do my best to play at my best. You always need luck, you always need things to come together and work. But I know I’m playing well. And I just wanted to give myself every chance to do my best. Brady left his home after 20 years to add a ring to his legacy for Super Bowl #7. Now Mickelson has the chance to complete his legacy at home. Like Sportscasting on Facebook. Follow us on Twitter @sportscasting19 . COMPARED TO: Phil Mickelson won a crazy bet on future star Jon Rahm
