In Week 1 of the 2021 NFL season, Patrick Mahomes led the Kansas City Chiefs to a dramatic fourth-quarter comeback against the Cleveland Browns. The victory was remarkable in and of itself. However, in doing so, the former NFL MVP established some remarkable milestones and maintained an incredible run.

In Week 1 of the NFL season, the Kansas City Chiefs shocked the Cleveland Browns with a late-game comeback.

In Week 1 of the 2021 season, the Kansas City Chiefs seemed to be in trouble. The Cleveland Browns, who were seeking for vengeance after Mahomes and the Chiefs knocked them out of the playoffs last season, got off to a fast start in the teams’ first meeting.

At halftime, the host team trailed 22-10 in the Arrowhead locker room.

Mahomes scored on a spectacular 75-yard touchdown throw to Tyreek Hill with little over 10 minutes remaining in the game to make the score 29-27. After a bobbled kick, the Chiefs special teams knocked down the Browns’ punter inside the 20-yard line, and Mahomes connected with Travis Kelce for the game-winning score soon after.

The victory was a spectacular start to what seems to be another great Mahomes/Chiefs season.

What’s more remarkable than the victory is that Kelce’s touchdown with 7:04 remaining in the fourth quarter kept an inconceivable streak alive. It’s something Mahomes has been working on since he first started playing in the NFL.

Patrick Mahomes’ amazing winning run was extended with this victory.

During the Chiefs’ last game of 2017, Patrick Mahomes took over as starter from Alex Smith. Since then, the quarterback has a 39-8 regular-season record and a 6-2 playoff record.

That record is remarkable in and of itself. It’s even more amazing when you consider how those games played out. That’s because Mahomes has begun every NFL game he’s ever played in with a lead.

It’s true, as crazy as it sounds. In 55 consecutive football games, Mahomes’ Chiefs have had a lead at some point.

Consider that for a moment.

Obviously, Mahomes has led the Chiefs to victory in every game he has played in. However, in each of the (only!) 10 games that the Texas Tech product has lost in his career, the club has led at least once.

The majority of Mahomes’ defeats have come in back-and-forth shootouts. The Chiefs trailed 21-17 and 28-24 to the New England Patriots in his first postseason game, which he lost 37-31.

The Chiefs lost by a total of 14 points in his first full season as a starter in 2018. During his 14 starts a year later, Mahomes lost three games by a total of 16 points.

Last season, Kansas City only lost one game with Mahomes at the helm (the club did lose in Week 16, but Mahomes was not on the field). The Los Angeles Raiders defeated the team 40-32. The Chiefs led until 2:38 of the first half, but they were never able to reclaim the advantage.

The Chiefs went up 3-0 on a Harrison Butker field goal in last year’s Super Bowl against Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before the Buccaneers came storming back, scoring 31 of the next 37 points.

One game into the 2021 season, Mahomes is still breaking records.

Patrick Mahomes set NFL records for passing yards (14,489) and passing touchdowns (117) in his first 50 career starts during today’s thrilling victory.

What’s the insane part? This was the 47th start. In front of our eyes, he’s rewriting the record books.

Patrick Mahomes’ history of leading is remarkable, but it’s not the only one he set on Sunday.

Mahomes set the record for most passing yards by an NFL quarterback in their first 50 starts in only his 47th game at the helm (14,372 yards). Kurt Warner of the St. Louis Rams owned the previous record.

On that final touchdown throw to Kelce, he also delivered his 117th career touchdown pass. That puts him one better of Dan Marino of the Miami Dolphins, who threw 116 passes in his first 50 games.

Mahomes still has two games left in September, and three more before he reaches the 50-game milestone in his career. He’s now 11-0 in September starts, so his winning run is likely to continue as he adds to his 50-game tally.

The next time the lead streak is on the line will be in Week 2 against the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday Night Football.
