To be sure, this is not a surprise to the NBA faithful since we have seen most of the top figures selected in the 2008 NBA Draft win a championship. However, since that draft is nearly 10 years old, I decided to take a look at who have won a championship since then. Here’s a look at the five players who have won a title with the 2007-08 season. – Lebron James (Lakers): The franchise’s most prolific winner ever, James has also been the Alpha and Omega of the team for the past four years. – Blake Griffin (Clippers): The former Oklahoma star has emerged as a franchise corner stone, and the best power forward in the league. – Dwight Howard (Magic): After a brief stint
One might think that the NBA Draft is an extremely important event where new players are scouted and selected. However, in the light of the recent draft, we have found that this is not the case. In fact, many of the best players picked in recent years haven’t even won the championship. Some of them have reached the finals, but lost. Other who have won the championship have never had the opportunity to be drafted in the first place.
This phenomenon of only 5 top-5 draft picks selected in 2008 or later to win a championship has been noted by many different people. This type of thing is no real surprise, considering that the top-5 picks in previous years were much more likely to win a title than they are today. It also doesn’t explain the choices of other people who won titles, such as Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, and Vince Carter, who were selected lower than the 5th pick. It’s also worth noting that Michael Conley and Dwayne Wade were both taken in the top-5 as well.. Read more about number 1 draft picks nba 2021 and let us know what you think.
Isn’t it clear that being a top-five selection in the NBA draft implies you’re a terrific basketball player? Being a first-round selection in the NBA implies you’re a superb basketball player, since only 60 individuals in the world are selected each year. But that isn’t the argument we’re attempting to make.
The lesson here is that having a top-five selection in the NBA draft does not ensure success for either the player or the club. There have been many top-five selections who have never played in an NBA All-Star Game or even participated in a single NBA game. Overall, the NBA draft is a huge risk, with clubs hoping that the players they choose will help them win a championship at some time. Things work out some of the time and some of the time they don’t.
There have been a slew of top-five selections who have gone on to play professionally in recent years. What if I told you (in our best 30 for 30 voice) that just five top-five selections had won an NBA title in the past 13 drafts, and all five required LeBron James’ assistance to do so?

The first three players chosen in the top five in the NBA draft in 2008 or later, as you may have guessed, each won their lone NBA championship with the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2016. Kevin Love, who was drafted fifth overall by the Memphis Grizzlies in 2008 and then moved to the Minnesota Timberwolves, was traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2014 and is still with the team.
The Cavaliers chose Kyrie Irving with the first overall selection in the 2011 NBA draft, while Tristan Thompson was selected three rounds later at No. 4. Irving stayed with the Cavs until 2017, while Thompson did so until 2020.
Of course, LeBron departed Cleveland for the second time in 2018 to join the Los Angeles Lakers, where he helped another pair of top-five NBA draft selections win a title.
In 2020, LeBron James’ teammates Anthony Davis and Dion Waiters, both top-five selections in the 2012 NBA draft, won a championship alongside him.
Anthony Davis and Dion Waiters, both of whom were chosen in the top five NBA draft choices in 2008 or later and won their first championship with the Lakers in 2020, are the other two top-five NBA draft picks to win a title.
Davis was drafted first overall in 2012 and spent his first seven seasons with the New Orleans Hornets/Pelicans before being moved to LA ahead of the 2019-20 season. The Cavaliers selected Waiters with the fourth overall selection in the same draft, and he stayed in Cleveland until early 2015, when he was dealt to the Oklahoma City Thunder. After a year and a half in Oklahoma City, he spent parts of four seasons with the Miami Heat until being moved to Memphis in February 2020. He never played for the Grizzlies, as he was released three days later.
Waiters joined the Lakers just before the season was halted due to COVID-19, and made his debut for the team in the Orlando bubble, playing in seven games. He also appeared in five Lakers playoff games, averaging two points in under eight minutes per game. Waiters was assured a ring regardless of who won the 2020 NBA Finals since he also played for Miami in 2019-20.
