When Mac Jones was a seven-year-old boy growing up in Cheyenne, Wyoming, he was always one of the younger players on his travel team. In his early years, he was one of the youngest players on his high school team and one of the youngest players on the University of Wyoming basketball team. But now, at the age of 36, Mac Jones is one of the most accomplished athletes in the history of the sport. Thats because he doesn’t just have the physical skills to play at the professional level, he has the mental toughness to master the game, which he refers to as “productive paranoia.”

There’s a famous quote that says “…the difference between predicting and getting results in life is not a matter of the degree of one person’s paranoia but rather the quality of the paranoia.”

When you think about it, Mac Jones has a lot to be paranoid about. No, not that he is paranoid about his safety, because his natural instinct is to panic. He is paranoid about his success. “I am like the Terminator, always trying to keep my head down and work,” Jones says. “That’s just how I think. So it’s kind of like a productive paranoia.”. There are many words and phrases people use to describe NFL quarterbacks. You can call them shooters, game wardens or double threaters. It’s not often you hear a QB called a prolific paranoid, but that’s exactly what New England Patriots quarterbacks coach Mac Jones says about him.

As strange as it sounds, to say that Jones has a productive paranoia is a compliment. According to renowned quarterbacks coach David Morris, it is this trait that drives Jones to constantly improve.

Mack Jones was part of an incredible group of quarterbacks at Alabama

In the fall of 2017, Jones and another top recruit and current Miami Dolphins QB, Tua Tagovailoa, joined current Philadelphia Eagles signal-caller Jalen Hurts on campus in Tuscaloosa, Ala.

Jones had his first season, but Tagovailoa played here and there, and when he was called up to the National Championship Game in 2018 in place of Hart, he helped lead the Crimson Tide to the title.

Harts and Tagovailoa split their time the following year, after which Harts transferred to Oklahoma. In Jones’ third season on campus, Tagovailoa suffered a serious hip injury, leading Jones to take the head coaching job. He retained the job after Tagovailoa left for the NFL, and in his junior season, led the school to another national championship.

Even with Hart and Tagovailoa leaving in 2021, Alabama’s quarterback room has remained strong. Jones is aided by Bryce Young, the second-best recruit and top QB in the country according to 247sports. Maybe Young will join Alabama’s QBs in the NFL in a few years.

Coach Jones says he is incredibly success oriented

This comment from QB Mac Jones’ coach David Morris (@QBCountry) is great.

When there are great competitors and really successful people, it creates a sense of productive paranoia. … I think that’s what Mac has.

One thing that probably kept Jones ready when he was third on the depth chart, and helped him grow into a QB who won a national championship and became the No. 15 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, was his desire to improve.

His personal coach, Morris, explained to NFL Network what drives Jones to keep improving:

When there are big competitors and really successful people, there is a sense of productive paranoia. If you do nothing, you will not get better. There’s someone who does more than me. I think that’s what Mac has.

Morris goes on to say that Jones’ work ethic is impressive, but that sometimes he can go too far. Maybe he does more than enough, or too much, Morris said. But that’s just her makeup. That’s his mentality.

That attitude will serve Jones well if he hopes to catch up with former Auburn Tigers QB Cam Newton and earn the starting job with the Patriots.

Cam Newton vs. Mack Jones could be the most exciting fight of NFL training camp

QB battles in training camp are always exciting. There should be some good fights in 2021. They are Jameis Winston against Tysom Hill (New Orleans Saints), Justin Fields against Andy Dalton (Chicago Bears) and Trey Lance against Jimmy Garoppolo (San Francisco 49ers).

The most interesting fight, however, will take place in Foxborough, Mass. Former NFL MVP Cam Newton is finally getting a real training camp and also a year in the system from administrative head Josh McDaniels. While his body recovers in the offseason, Newton hopes to return to the form that made him a top-10 QB a few years ago.

On the other hand, more is expected of Jones than any other QB in the Bill Belichick era. He must have been recommended by Nick Saban, Jones’ former coach and confidant to Belichick.

The Pats will try to rebuild in 2021 after missing the playoffs for the third time in the last 20 years, and Belichick and Daniels should pick the QB who gives the team the best chance to do so. It will be interesting to see if they go for a short term fix with Newton or (hopefully) a long term fix with Jones.
