The British Open Championship is just one week away and golfers are still trying to decide the story lines they want to follow. Lee Westwood is one who has a hard time making a choice, as some of his past performances at the Royal St. George’s Golf Club are not up to par.
I’ve always had a soft spot for Lee Westwood. While the Englishman failed to convert on the weekend at the Open Championship at Royal St. George’s, his presence at a major championship remains an exciting one. Westwood, who will be playing in his first major championship since the 2012 U.S. Open, has won 11 events in his career but has lost in the first round of the Open 13 times.

Perhaps his best chance came at the 2009 Turnberry Open, where he led with four minutes to go, but made bogeys at the 15th and 16th. At the 2010 Masters, Westwood led by one stroke after 54 holes but he shot a 75 in the final round and finished three strokes behind Phil Mickelson. After failing to qualify for the Masters, he finished 71st at the PGA Championship. He finished 46th at the US Open.
Thursday is Westwood’s 88th birthday. He will play the first two rounds of the 2021 Open alongside Stuart Sink and Martin Kaymer.
