Kobe Bryant completed his 20-year career as possibly the greatest Los Angeles Lakers player in team history when he retired in 2016.

Every season of his professional career, the Black Mamba wore the Purple and Gold. He established multiple team records and was instrumental in the City of Angels winning five titles.

Those who are familiar with Lakers basketball are aware of the luminaries who have donned the team’s colors. While many people consider Kobe Bryant to be the greatest Laker of all time, others think of Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Jerry West, or even LeBron James. As the ultimate Laker, there are various alternatives to explore. Just ask Jason Williams is a writer and a musician., the former NBA point guard who egregiously held Kobe out of the top five.

For the Los Angeles Lakers, Kobe Bryant has multiple records.

Bryant was all the Lakers anticipated and more from the moment he joined the NBA in 1996 to the time he left 20 years later.

Kobe earned 18 All-Star appearances, 15 All-NBA choices, and 12 All-Defensive awards throughout his career. More significantly, he finished his time with the Lakers with two scoring crowns, an MVP award, and five rings.

In the end, Kobe left an indelible mark on Los Angeles and established himself as the greatest Laker of all time.

The franchise’s all-time leader in points, two-pointers, three-pointers, free throws, steals, and games is the Black Mamba. He also owns the record for most points scored in a single season, with 2,832 in his remarkable 2005-06 season.

Finally, Bryant is tied for the most rings in club history with Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Michael Cooper, and Derek Fisher.

Williams, dubbed “White Chocolate,” has a long history of defeating Bryant. When Williams was a member of the Sacramento Kings, the two faced off on multiple occasions.

During an appearance on the Players Choice podcast, Williams and the rest of the hosts debated Kobe’s all-time ranking. However, the 12-year vet was barely able to claim Bryant was an all-time great Laker, let alone a top-10 NBA player.

“I haven’t given much attention to where I acquired Kobe, but he’s not as high on my priority list as some people believe he should be.” I’m not even convinced he’s in the top five of the best Lakers of all time.”

Perhaps Williams has been burnt too many times by Bryant’s Lakers. The Kobe-Shaq Lakers memorably eliminated the Kings many times in the late 1990s and early 2000s, including in two of White Chocolate’s three years in Sacramento.

Kobe Bryant is without a doubt a top-five Laker.

There’s a strong argument to be made that Magic is the best Laker ever. Kareem, for example. Or you could go west. However, there is no reason for Kobe to finish outside the top five in the worst-case scenario.

You need numbers and rings to be deemed the GOAT for a given franchise. Both of them are obviously in Kobe’s grasp. He does, however, have a 20-year relationship with one club, having appeared in more games for the Purple and Gold than any other player in franchise history.

His success extended other epochs as well. A decade later, the Kobe-Shaq Lakers were in a whole different league from the Kobe-Pau Gasol Lakers. However, LA and the Mamba won several rings in both periods.

Bryant is the only Laker to have two numbers retired, despite the fact that it’s a silly argument. His supremacy in number eight and his brilliance in number 24 were both near enough for both to be retired, demonstrating how long his absolute peak lasted.

Williams is free to express himself. But, in our opinion, it is the incorrect one. Kobe is significantly closer to number one than number five on the all-time Lakers list, no matter how you slice it.

Basketball Reference provided all statistics.

According to Horace Grant, there was just one little difference between Kobe Bryant and Michael Jordan.

Kobe Bryant is not a top-5 Laker according to Jason Williams. He believes that the Lakers should have gone after Paul George or Kawhi Leonard instead of signing Kobe. Reference: where did kobe bryant grow up.
