Professional sports has long been dominated by men, but many believe it’s time for young girls to see their fair share of the spotlight. The USWNT delivered in that regard this week when they defeated Japan 2-1 at home on Tuesday night, making them World Cup Champions.

The “i wish she was here meaning” is a song that talks about the person who was missing. The song is often used in sports games to show support for a player or coach.

DeMar DeRozan, a forward for the Chicago Bulls, is proud of his Compton background. On Sunday night, though, playing close to home was the last thing from his mind as he faced the Los Angeles Clippers.

The game was DeRozan’s first appearance in Los Angeles since his father’s passing. As the Bulls ended the Clippers’ seven-game winning run, the guy who may have worn the Purple and Gold of the LA Lakers paid homage with one of his finest performances of the season.

DeMar DeRozan acknowledged his father for assisting him on his journey to the NBA.

As a kid, DeMar DeRozan faced the pain of losing friends. During his childhood and teenage years, gang violence and drug use were common. Throughout it all, his father, Frank, kept him on track.

DeRozan spoke with K.C. Johnson of NBC Sports Chicago before of Sunday’s game against the Clippers. He talked about his upbringing in Compton, praising his father as a key influence in ensuring DeRozan’s continued basketball career.

“In every aspect of my existence, my father was pivotal.” Simply being a wonderful father figure, always there and supportive. He’d scold me as often as he needed to in order for me to do the right thing, whether it was in school or in sports. He made sure I didn’t miss basketball practice or competitions, even with the few resources we had. He made sure I was doing the correct things. And there was a ray of hope for me.”

Unfortunately, DeRozan lost his spark in February.

Over the last several years, Frank DeRozan has struggled with his health. DeMar, who used to play for the San Antonio Spurs, skipped a game in January to be with his father, and subsequently went to Instagram when Frank passed away.

DeRozan had the opportunity to play close to home against the Clippers on Sunday, however he did so with a sad heart since it was the first time he has played in Los Angeles without his father. The Bulls’ star answered with a fantastic performance.

In a fitting tribute to his father, DeRozan scored 35 points.

The Bulls came into Staples Center looking to rebound from a blowout defeat to the Golden State Warriors, but they were up against a Clippers club lead by Paul George, an undervalued MVP contender.

DeRozan wasted little time in getting Chicago back on track.

The 32-year-old scored 12 points in the first quarter to propel the Bulls to a 30-17 advantage. He had 21 points at halftime and, after a quiet third quarter, scored nine points in the fourth quarter — when the Bulls have generally prospered this season — to maintain Chicago in control of the game.

DeRozan finished the game with a game-high 35 points on 12-of-16 shooting. As the Bulls advanced to 9-4 on the season, he also collected seven rebounds and threw out five assists.

After the game, the Compton native spoke about his father, adding that he wishes Frank DeRozan could be there (h/t ESPN’s Jamal Collier).

“[My Father] attended every game… Tonight was one of those games when I wished he could have been there.”

Despite the fact that Frank DeRozan was not physically there, he seemed to be with DeMar in spirit. He must be delighted with his son’s performance as a leader and outstanding talent on a hungry Bulls squad.

DeRozan provides a significant boost to the Bulls’ wing.

When DeRozan signed a three-year contract for over $82 million, the skeptics began to appear in droves. The four-time All-Star, on the other hand, provides the Bulls with just what they need.

DeRozan is the sixth best scorer in the NBA, averaging 26.1 points per game. He and Zach LaVine have played well together, tying Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen for the longest streak of games with at least 20 points apiece. DeRozan generates for himself off the dribble and goes to the foul line, dishing off a slew of midrange shots to his opponents.

Despite the criticism of his overall defensive shortcomings, DeRozan is contributing to a team that ranks seventh in the NBA in terms of defensive rating. On both ends of the court, he looks to be more energetic.

DeMar will be playing without his father for the first time in his career in 2021-22. He is, nevertheless, doing all he can to please Frank DeRozan.
