Around 10 years ago, a man named Jay Townsend began working with professional golfer Dustin Johnson. Jay was first introduced to Johnson by a mutual friend, who told him about the rising golfer and his struggles with his swing. The first thing Jay noticed was how Johnson was able to maintain a perfect ball flight as he had a tendency to slice it to the right. Jay offered to help Johnson with his swing, and the two have been working together ever since.

Dustin Johnson is the “closest thing I’ve seen to Tiger Woods” according to one of golf’s most celebrated instructors. Gary McCord says the world No. 1 is the best player he’s ever seen, and that he’s also the best player he’s ever taught.

At 36 years old, Dustin Johnson is almost certainly too far along in his career to surpass Tiger Woods’ accomplishments. In the short term, however, a serious PGA Tour columnist believes D.J. can match a top-15 major winner in shots and weeks.

Dustin Johnson has only won two major tournaments

word-image-10073 word-image-10074 Dustin Johnson is looking to add another championship this season to the U.S. Open title he won in 2016. | Sean M. Haffey/Getty Images Johnson arrived in Torrey Pines this week as one of the favorites to win the 121st annual championship. U.S. Open Golf Championship and discovered there was already a trophy with his name on it. Each year the PGA Tour presents this award to the member who topped the Official World Golf Ranking for the most weeks during the previous season. A record five golfers have held the title for at least one week, but a Masters victory kept Johnson in first place for 19 weeks in 2020, giving him his third Mark McCormack Award. The fact that he has won three of those trophies speaks volumes about the level of consistency in Johnson’s game. He has won tournaments every year since 2008, has led the annual wins list twice and is 5th in prize money. What he has not managed to do so far, however, is collect a large number of championship titles. He won the U.S. Open in 2016 and the Masters last fall, but Johnson also has five second-place finishes at Grand Slams to his name since 2011. He must overcome that hurdle and shake off the missed cuts at the Masters and PGA Championship this spring. Butch Harmon says Johnson has everything needed for the job.

Johnson impresses PGA Tour’s star swing coach

. Harmon, 77, is one of the best-known and most respected golf teachers in the country. The list of stars with whom he has had long-term relationships over the years includes Johnson, Phil Mickelson and Greg Norman. He was also Woods’ top assistant from 1993 to 2004. In that time, he won eight major titles, including two U.S. Opens. In this regard, Harmon is authoritative in using Woods as a point of comparison. At the height of his career, Woods played with a confidence that allowed him to take risks. Golf fans did not often get to see this aspect of his game, as he rarely found himself in situations that required such ingenuity. The ability to play outside his comfort zone is a quality Harmon sees in Johnson, who is currently ranked No. 1 in the world behind Justin Thomas and Jon Rahm. He’s not afraid of one shot, Harmon said on his Claude’s Off Coursepodcast, according to He’s not afraid to take a chance, even if it’s a tough one.

If it’s Johnson vs Rory McElroy….

. Although Rory McIlroy is ranked 11th in the world prior to the US Open, Harmon says he is a potential contender for Johnson in the draw. When he’s in a good mood, no one can beat him, Harmon said of Johnson. If they are all on a good pace and Dustin Johnson is playing 100%, they can’t beat him. And that’s not to blame Rory, because he’s a phenomenal player….. but Dustin Johnson, when he’s on a roll, is the closest thing to a Tiger Woods I’ve ever seen. Johnson has been in the game long enough to play in 24 PGA Tour events. McIlroy has won 18 tournaments, including four majors. Right now, none of the golfers can be classified as Woods for the simplest of reasons. The difference is that Tiger has been there for 20 years, he said. Like Sportscasting on Facebook.
