The Trail Blazers’ offseason has been a tumultuous one, with Damian Lillard undergoing emergency surgery to repair the ulnar collateral ligament in his left thumb and Jusuf Nurkic leaving via trade. The team is already making plans for their upcoming season without them. They need only look at some of the best teams around to see that you can rebuild before free agency begins, but also enjoy success on the court and set themselves up for long-term sustainability.

The “nba news” is Damian Lillard’s surgery only accelerates the timeline for the Portland Trail Blazers’ imminent rebuild. The team will have to find a new point guard next season, but they are hoping that he can return by the end of the year.

Damian Lillard will have surgery to fix an abdominal issue he has been suffering with since the Tokyo Olympics.

Lillard is having the worst year of his career. He was out for most of 2021-22 due to injury, and when he did play, he had one of his poorest statistical seasons.

With the Blazers in a funk and their franchise player out, it’s time to start a rebuild — one that’s been on NBA decision-makers’ thoughts for some time.

Dame is having his worst season in almost every statistical category since his rookie or second year in the NBA.

As of Jan. 13, Lillard has only appeared in 29 of the Blazers’ 40 games.

His scoring (24.9) and rebounding (4.1) averages rank fourth and fifth, respectively, in his nine-year career. Since 2014-15, he hasn’t averaged fewer than 24 points a game.

His effective field-goal percentage (48.6), shooting percentage (40.2), and 3-point shooting % (32.4) are all career lows.

On the plus side, Portland is still in the running for a spot in the play-in round! The squad currently sits in 10th position in the Western Conference standings with a record of 16-24.

Unfortunately, the Blazers are closer to the Sacramento Kings in 11th place than the Minnesota Timberwolves in ninth place. And they’re still missing CJ McCollum, Dame’s Robin, who is sidelined indefinitely due to a collapsed lung.

According to ESPN, the Blazers’ chances of making the playoffs have all but vanished without Lillard out at least six to eight weeks.

The news of Dame’s operation should be the last straw, prompting a much-needed overhaul.

So that’s the end of the season. So, what’s next?

Alex, what do you mean by a total deconstruction for 500?

Long before the season started, Lillard’s name was mentioned in trade speculations. The Philadelphia 76ers were the franchise most often linked to him in one of the 15,000 possible Ben Simmons trades.

However, Portland, which was correct at the time, said no. Perhaps it would have been better to send Dame Dolla to greener pastures in retrospect.

With their superstar point guard at the helm, the Blazers went all the way to the Western Conference Finals in the 2018-19 season. The Golden State Warriors swept them in the next round.

The team has reached its limit and has gone as far as Lillard can lead them. What’s more obvious is that Portland has gone as far as Lillard and McCollum’s combo can carry them.

It’s time to part ways with CJ, as well as the expiring contracts of Jusuf Nurkic and Robert Covington.

The two most promising young assets Portland has are Anfernee Simons and Nassir Little. They should be allowed to remain. Everyone on the roster should be available other from that.

The only remaining dilemma is what to do with Dame, who is the elephant in the room. With everything he’s done for the Portland community and the butts he keeps in the seats, keeping him with the organization may be the proper decision.

Lillard, on the other hand, would command a high price even if he were beyond his prime and had a long list of injuries. He’s one of the greatest players in the NBA when he’s at his best. If the franchise made it known that he was available, a bidding war would start.

The treasury the Blazers would get in exchange for Dame would hasten the eventual reconstruction tenfold.

Both the Blazers and Damian Lillard need immediate personnel adjustments.

Even Lillard conceded that he could have to retire this year, which is difficult to digest for someone with his pride.

The following is taken from the same ESPN article:

“It wasn’t easy at all since I like being outside so much.” In a report on the Blazers’ official website, Lillard stated of his choice to undergo surgery, “I enjoy being out there playing.”

“I’ve always been willing to play, but I believe that the older you grow, the more experience you get, not only in sports but in life, the more vital it becomes to play chess.” ‘Keep battling it out, get the job done again,’ my pride could urge. ‘Aim to make the playoffs.’ “You can’t accomplish none of those things if you’re not at your best,” the elder me says.

The season has paid off for Notre Dame. However, things aren’t looking well for 2022-23.

So it’s finally time for Portland to utter the terrible “T” word, which it’s been trying to avoid for years.

It’s time to go down in flames. provided all data.
