After recording a career-high 744 yards and five touchdowns in 2018, Wide Receiver Michael Gallup has made his intentions clear for the 2019 NFL season.
The Dallas Cowboys have already lost Dez Bryant, Jason Witten and Orlando Scandrick. So, who’s left? Over the last couple of seasons, we’ve seen the emergence of second-year wide receiver Michael Gallup, who many believe is the team’s best playmaker not named Ezekiel Elliott. Having drawn comparisons to Dez Bryant’s game at Oklahoma State, Gallup made four catches for 104 yards in the Cowboys’ week three loss against the New York Giants.
Now that the draft is over, the first round of free agency has come and gone, and perhaps you’re wondering what the Cowboys’ plans are for Michael Gallup. Well, if you thought that we’d just tell you, you’d be mistaken. The Cowboys are still trying to figure out what they’ll do with Gallup, but they’re not the only team interested in the slot receiver.
The Dallas Cowboys need to improve in several areas if they want to succeed in the 2021 NFL season. However, one area where they are already very strong is in the offensive positions. Dak Prescott has Ezekiel Elliott, Amari Cooper and other elite athletes surrounding him. However, Dallas might run out of money to pay them all, as the next big player the team has to worry about is Cowboys WR Michael Gallup. However, Gallup recently announced its intentions for the future of free agency.
Cowboys WR Michael Gallup is a free agent next season

November 2019. | Tom Pennington/Getty Images The Cowboys have spent the last few seasons paying their star players. Ezekiel Elliott signed a six-year, $90 million contract with the team and Amari Cooper signed a five-year, $100 million contract. After years of not being able to get a deal done, the Cowboys signed Dak Prescott this season for four years and $160 million. With all that spending, you’d think they wouldn’t worry about paying their skill position players for a while, but now Dallas has to worry about contracting with Gallup. Gallup is still under contract and according to CBS Sports, because he was selected in the third round of the draft, he does not have an option for the fifth year, making him a free agent after next season. Unless Dallas does the same to Prescott and decides to tag Gallup. Gallup has been a pleasant surprise in his young career, becoming a breakthrough player after being drafted by the Cowboys in the third round of the 2018 NFL Draft. After catching 33 passes for 507 yards and two touchdowns in his rookie season, Gallup had a big year in 2019. He caught 66 passes for 1,107 yards and six touchdowns in 14 games. In 2020, Prescott continued to find success despite being out for most of the year: he caught 59 passes for 843 yards and five touchdowns. So, based on its results, Gallup will definitely get paid. But does he want Dallas to be the team that pays him?
Cowboys midfielder has declared his free will
Gallup recently appeared on NFL Network Good Morning Football and answered a question about his contract situation. You’ll definitely think about it, but there’s nothing you can do about it except go out and do what you have to do, Gallup said. You don’t get a contract if you don’t do what you’re supposed to do, primarily on the field. So I guess that’s something to think about: We can’t say anything about the future. You just have to do what you have to do at the time. For me it’s about being on the pitch, helping the club, winning games and having fun at the same time. Gallup isn’t talking about his contract, but he did make one thing clear: He wants to stay with the Cowboys. Of course I would want to stay here, I love being in Dallas, I love the community, I love this city, I love the fans, he said. So everything is still up in the air, but I want to be here. So we’ll see.
Will Cowboys WR Michael Gallup be saved?
. Why do the Cowboys want Gallup on the outside from a production standpoint? With Prescott, he totaled over 1,100 yards in 14 games in 2019. But given the talent the team already has and the money they’re currently spending, it’s easy to imagine a scenario where Gallup would just become an unknown. We don’t know how much Gallup will earn in his next contract, but let’s just say it will be about what a franchise tag costs for wide receivers. In 2021, franchise wide receivers earn $15.98 million. According to Spotrac, the Cowboys will already be over the salary cap in 2022, the first year of Gallup’s new contract. So right now they don’t even have the estimated $16 million that Gallup could have cost this season. Sure, they can move a few players and do some work on their contract to make room, but what about C.D. Lamb? Dallas will also have to worry about Lamb’s salary in a few years, and from the outside, the team seems more confident in Lamb’s future than Gallup’s. Of course, that doesn’t mean Gallup is leaving Dallas. If he wants to stay with the Cowboys, and if he has another good year, it’s hard to imagine Jerry Jones letting him go. But given all the financial obligations the Cowboys already have, and will have to pay in the future, it may be too much for Gallup.
