The New England Patriots (28-3) are on pace to win the Super Bowl. They’re on pace to be the first team since the 1972 Miami Dolphins to have two or more players go over 100 yards in a game. One of these players, Sony Michel, is on pace to set a new NFL rookie rushing record.

Bill Belichick has a habit of pulling off the seemingly impossible. Which is why it’s actually not that crazy to believe he can pull off another “heist” with his New England Patriots.

Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots have already made an important decision about running back Sony Michel this offseason. The Patriots did not clear Michel’s option for the fifth year, meaning he has a chance to become a free agent next year. In an already busy offseason, Belichick should now try to trade the former first-round running back.

Sonny Michel may be entering his senior year with the New England Patriots

Lee/The Boston Globe via Getty Images COMPARED TO: The NFL has officially given Tom Brady the chance to punish Bill Belichick and the Patriots in the most ironic way The New England Patriots selected Sony Michel with the No. 31 pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, hoping he will be the franchise’s starting running back in the coming years. This idea didn’t pan out. Three years into his NFL career, the former USA Today High School champion may have played his last game in New England. Due to injuries, he played in just nine games in the Patriots’ disappointing 7-9 season last year and handed out 79 assists. Michel rushed for 2,292 yards and 14 touchdowns in the first 38 games of his career with the Patriots. He also caught 26 balls for 258 yards and a touchdown. In four career playoff games, the former first-round pick has rushed for 397 yards and six touchdowns, all in the Patriots’ postseason Super Bowl run. However, the Patriots seem ready to go in a different direction. Damien Harris passed Michel on the depth chart last year and is under contract through the end of the 2022 season.

Patriots should try to trade Michel before the season starts

COMPARED TO: Mac Jones could cost Cam Newton millions by losing 19 million dollars himself If Bill Belichick and the Patriots can find a buyer for Michel, they shouldn’t hesitate to let him go. The former first-round pick will play the entire 2021 season at the age of 26 and has shown an impressive ability to fight for every yard. In 2020, he averaged 5.7 yards per attempt on just 79 passes. You could argue that these positive attributes are why Belichick and the Patriots should keep Michel, who could be motivated to play at an elite level in a contract year. However, the Patriots seem to be relying on Harris, who averaged five yards per carry last year and led the team in rushing. The Patriots also selected Oklahoma’s Ramondre Stevenson in the fourth round of the 2021 NFL Draft. James White, a versatile defender, signed a new contract in March. That leaves a lot of work for Michel, who is young and talented enough to make a decent profit on the free market.

Which teams should Michel try to trade?

COMPARED TO: Packers have serious trade request for Aaron Rodgers In theory, Michel’s age, experience and lack of financial obligations after the 2021 season should be enough for the Patriots to select him in the fifth round of the 2022 NFL Draft. It would be a sensational return for Michel, who has had injury problems in the NFL. Former Patriots backup quarterback Cliff Kingsbury is now the coach of the Arizona Cardinals. Although the Cardinals seem ready to give Chase Edmonds the primary role of guard in 2021, they could use Michel in the mix and give Kyler Murray a 1-2 punch in the backfield. Although the Miami Dolphins still need depth at the running back position, intra-division trades are rare in the NFL. However, the Patriots acquired receiver Isaiah Ford last season in a deal with the Dolphins, so there is precedent for a transaction between the two sides. Former Patriots defensive coordinator Brian Flores is entering his third season as head coach of the Dolphins. Don’t rule out the Detroit Lions either. Lions running back D’Andre Swift impressed in his first year, but missed time due to a concussion. The new team may want another young, cheap running back if they are concerned about Swift’s professional future. The New England Patriots open the 2021 season on Sunday the 12th. September, against Flores and the Dolphins. Only time will tell if Michel is on the sidelines or in a totally different state. Like Sportscasting on Facebook. Follow us on Twitter @sportscasting19 .
