The first pay-per-view post WrestleMania 33 belongs to RAW and the red brand’s superstars look to incite payback onto one another. It will have a different feel than other PPVs mostly because the Superstar Shakeup forces some Smackdown stars to compete on the PPV which is odd to say the least but the storylines will be finished by the end of this event so it really doesn’t do any damage. This event will feature the first ever House of Horrors match when Randy Orton takes on Bray Wyatt, Roman Reigns and Braun Strowman continue their brutal rivalry, The Hardy Boyz make their second defense of the Raw Tag Team titles when they take on Cesaro and Sheamus, Chris Jericho looks to recapture his United States title when he takes on Kevin Owens and Seth Rollins finally clashes with Samoa Joe. Who will walk out victorious? Let’s take a look.
Enzo and Cass vs Anderson and Gallows
This match was announced this past Monday on Raw and it will be your basic tag team affair. There is no real hype behind this match because these two teams have faced off before, this match was really created so these guys weren’t left off the card. Gallows and Anderson are coming off a title run with the Raw Tag Team titles so they look to be in good form but Enzo and Cass need a victory on a PPV to get some momentum going. It is for that reason they will win this match. Enzo and Cass should be elevated to face The Hardys soon and it starts here with a victory over the Good Brothers.
Raw Women’s Championship: Bayley (c) vs Alexa Bliss
It’s nice to see the newly traded Alexa Bliss get a title opportunity in her first PPV since being traded to Raw but the former Smackdown Women’s champ won’t win her first Raw title just yet. Bayley’s run as champion has just been mediocre, she hasn’t had a standout match yet as champion and her promos could still use some work but officials are still high on her as champ so her reign will continue past Payback. Bliss deserves a run with the title but she is going to have to wait.
Seth Rollins vs Samoa Joe
This match will probably be the match of the night due to the long history between these two. Internet smarks rejoiced when this match was made official for Payback because we get to see two indie darlings compete in WWE. When Samoa Joe signed with WWE many fans said a match with Seth Rollins is a dream scenario, those dreams are coming true this Sunday. Calling the winner for this is tough but Samoa Joe will ultimately get the victory at Payback. Joe was cut from the WrestleMania card and to look like a legitimate force he needs a nice clean victory over a main event star.
United States Championship: Kevin Owens (c) vs Chris Jericho
This match will be great but the winner is too obvious. Kevin Owens will retain his newly won US championship because you can’t take a belt off a main event guy like Owens so quickly. Also Chris Jericho is taking some time off from WWE for a bit so putting the title on him would do more harm than good. Owens will continue to be the face of America over on Smackdown for a while but first he needs to end this rivalry with Jericho for good.
Crusierweight Championship: Neville (c) vs Austin Aries
Their WrestleMania match was good but this one will be even better. This is going to be a great match (possibly even match of the night) because PPV usually bring out the best in the Crusierweights. We saw at Fastlane the match Neville had against Jack Gallagher and that was incredible but just think about what the two best Crusierweights will do. There seems to be no end in sight for Neville as the King of the Crusierweights but don’t be surprised if Austin Aries pulls out the victory though. Neville will get an assist from the new heel TJ Perkins and thus the victory, retaining his title.
Raw Tag Team Championship: The Hardys (c’s) vs Cesaro & Sheamus
It was one of the most heart stopping moments in WWE history when The Hardys returned home at WrestleMania 33 and captured the Raw Tag Team titles. The Broken One and Brother Nero will not lose these titles at Payback but this match will be very good. Sheamus and Cesaro have run their course it feels like and a break up in the near future wouldn’t be surprising. It will be interesting to see who steps up and faces the BROKEN champs next.
Roman Reigns vs Braun Strowman
Braun Strowman has been on a tear as of late. After injuring Roman Reigns then tipping over the ambulance he was in (yes he did that, he is a very strong boy) Strowman has run through every member of the Raw roster, including a ring shattering encounter with the Big Show. Reigns has been off TV to sell the Strowman injury so that should make indication as to who will win here but it doesn’t. Braun Strowman will continue his dominance and walk out of Payback with a victory over the big dog. This match could end in a dirty way as both men are ridings waves of momentum but the smart call is to have Strowman beat Reigns.
House of Horrors match: Bray Wyatt vs Randy Orton
It is unknown what exactly a House of Horrors match exactly is but one thing is for certain is the WWE title will NOT be defended which is the right call. You want to make it seem like Bray Wyatt has an actual chance of winning this and by having the WWE title on the line makes it a little too obvious that Orton will win because one, he just won the title at WrestleMania and two, Wyatt just got traded to Raw. But by taking away the title stipulation Wyatt has a chance to win at his own game and that is exactly what will happen. Won’t do Bray any good if he loses a match he created to a superstar who isn’t on the same roster as him.
Here is who the rest of the STF Wrestling Department thinks will win at Payback!
Patrick: Randy Orton, Braun Strowman, Kevin Owens, The Hardys, Seth Rollins, Alexa Bliss, Austin Aries
Szabo: Randy Orton, Braun Strowman, Kevin Owens, The Hardys, Samoa Joe, Bayley, Neville
Colin: Bray Wyatt, Braun Strowman, Kevin Owens, The Hardys, Seth Rollins, Bayley, Neville
Justin: Bray Wyatt, Roman Reigns, Kevin Owens, The Hardys, Samoa Joe, Bayley, Neville
