Rundown of UFC Fight Night: Penn vs Rodriguez

By the bWoMMA Department
The UFC starts off their 2017 with a changing of the guard match-up as the innovative young gun (#10)Yair Rodriguez takes on UFC Hall of Famer BJ Penn in what should be an entertaining fight. We’ve seen this story before from Penn so caution should be noted as he’s fell short in the majority of his comebacks. Rodriguez is one of the most electrifying fighters in all of MMA, he is the perfect combination of crazy and technique.
In the co-main event, you’ve got UFC mainstay Joe Lauzon taking on Marcin Held in a nice match-up, both fighters come into this fight with a loss, however, Lauzon ran through Diego Sanchez at UFC 200 while Held lost a somewhat close decision to Sanchez back in November. Rounding out the main card is Court McGee vs Ben Saunders who is making his return to the UFC and (#8)John Moraga-(#15)Sergio Pettis. After a highly successful 2016, the UFC will look to carry that momentum into 2017 and what better way than to showcase one of the most exciting fighters in the UFC against a Hall of Famer so enjoy the fights!

Main Event

(#10)Yair “El Pantera” Rodriguez vs BJ “The Prodigy” Penn

Justin “Meanie” Szabo: Yair via 1st round TKO

Analysis: Youth wins more often than age.

Richard “Richie B” Bowman: Yair via 1st round TKO

Analysis: Look, I know this might seem crazy given BJ Penn has a giant bowling ball for a head but Yair is just so quick and unpredictable that BJ should be an easy target for him, plus given his age(38 years old), this should not bode well for Penn. Look for Yair Rodriguez to take out the UFC Hall of Famer quick and precise while Penn’s movement slows down drastically after each electrifying strike. There is a chance that Penn could take everything Yair throws at him and survive a long time but it just seems unlikely that we’ll see Penn pull this one out, he’s had a great career but he’s been fighting on borrowed time now since 2011. After this fight, it should be time for Yair to fight a legit ranked guy at 145, he should be ready for it.

Masked Man: Rodriguez via 1st round TKO

Analysis: I love BJ but let’s be honest here – BJ is 38. Yair is 24. BJ hasn’t fought in over two years. Yair has fought, and beaten, five fighters since BJ’s last fight. BJ has lost five of his last seven with one of those being a draw. Yair has won seven straight. BJ had his time. Yair is looking to be a Championship contender.
