The dream will continue for the rightfully named DuBois Dream, as the Premier Basketball League season tips-off December 31st as the Chautauqua Hurricanes and Rochester Razorsharks set the tone for the 2017 PBL season. DuBois, however, won’t get a taste of the action until the flip of the new year when they begin their 20-game season in Chautauqua on January 7th. DuBois’ home games will be held at DuBois Central Catholic High School, the first coming on January 21st against the Jamestown Jackals.
A complete schedule can be found here.
Fresh off their creation and first appearance at The Basketball Tournament, a winner-take-all $2 million tournament which aired on ESPN, Albert Varacallo, the team’s owner, general manager and player, will continue his dream while offering anyone the opportunity to fulfill their own dream of playing professional basketball.
A native of DuBois, Pennsylvania, Varacallo has played and excelled in his fair share of basketball. Varacallo was a standout at DuBois Central Catholic before beginning his college career at Division II Gannon University and later Division III Washington & Jefferson College. After College, he kept his hoop dreams alive in the American Basketball Association with the Steel City Yellow Jackets.
Credited with the creation of the DuBois Dream, Albert Varacallo assumed ownership of the team through DuBois Dream LLC, of which he is the CEO. On December 7th, 2016, the team was officially accepted to participate in this upcoming PBL season.
The Premier Basketball League, which has been considered “the Triple-A of Minor League basketball in the state”, consists of teams from New York, Indianapolis, Kentucky, Michigan, Rhode Island, Washington D.C., and now Pennsylvania. A complete list of teams can be found here.
Supported by Pittsburgh Legends such as the Pittsburgh Steelers’ Antonio Brown and Pittsburgh Pirate Andrew McCutchen, the team has a strong foundation that is community-driven; something Varacallo takes great pride in which you can read more about in my previous article on the DuBois Dream.
